The Descending of the Devils

I take you today to Uquía, Jujuy, Argentina, for a ritual known as the “Descending of the Devils of Uquía”. The devils descend from a sacred mountain to disrupt all roles within the town. For eight days, we dance, play, celebrate, and honor Pachamama, surrendering our bodies and identities to the Carnival. This means being covered in flour, foam, or paint by anyone, anywhere on our bodies. After the initial annoyance, self-identity fades, and all masks fall away… ¡Agarrame Carnaval!
